The rate and scale of distributed generation adoption in Hawai’i leads the U.S. – nearly 20% of total electric utility customers in the state have adopted a solar rooftop PV system. This rapid growth in adoption poses significant questions for the state’s policymakers and electric utilities as they aim to balance DER growth driven by customer choice, strong renewable energy and climate state policies, and a need to ensure a safe and reliable grid necessary to provide electricity at affordable costs.

More Than Smart has partnered with the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute to comprehensively guide the state’s distribution planning efforts using the Walk/Jog/Run Framework, focusing first on key priority needs that may solve the current constraints on the distribution system.
